Overview of Position:
This position is responsible for direct patient care outcomes in the Orthopedic Clinic. The incumbent applies/removes/repairs casts, splints, and orthotic devices as ordered by the physician in a fast paced, multi-disciplinary clinic setting. Under the direction of the Orthopedic Physician, assists in the examination, treatment, and follow-up care of patients with orthopedic conditions. Under the direction of a registered nurse assist with the care of orthopedic center patients.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES

1. Applies and maintains casts, splints and orthopedic soft good appliances as directed by a physician or nurse practitioner. Provides patients and families with instructions on cast care, crutch walking and orthopedic appliance care.
2. Demonstrates sterile and aseptic techniques, as appropriate, in the performance of and/or assisting with procedures and interventions.
3. Maintains adequate inventory of orthopedic supplies. Including ordering supplies and putting away stock.
4. Responsible for cleaning and stocking exam and treatment rooms between patients and at the end of the clinic session.
5. Under the direction of a physician, may perform wound dressings, suture removal, debridement and irrigation of wounds, application of splints, casts and other orthopedic appliances, and crutch fitting and instruction.
6. Documents procedure and other appropriate information on the medical record.
7. Supports the philosophy and objectives of Genesis Healthcare System and assists in interpreting these to patients and visitors.
8. Performs duties within the framework of established policies and procedures.
9. Provides a therapeutic environment and appropriate interaction with the patient and family.
10. Participates in department meetings, quality assurance/Improvement activities and the evaluation of practice changes in relation to the cast technician role.
11. Assists with orientation of new personnel.
12. Attends and provides unit in-service education programs as appropriate to role.
13. Continues professional growth through the identification of personal learning needs, setting goals and planning a course of action to meet those needs.

QUALIFICATIONS
1. High School Diploma
2. Requires a medical certification through appropriate board or obtained within the first twelve (12) months.
3. Must have at least two (2) years of relevant experience.
4. Requires certification of Orthopedic Technologist (OTC) or obtain within two years from date of hire.
5. Requires knowledge of casts, splints, orthotic, and other similar device applications.
6. Must have experience operating cast saw, spreader and other cast tools and equipment.
7. Strong interpersonal, customer service, and written and oral communication skills.
8. Ability to provide patient care in a warm and friendly manner.
