This is an opportunity to join our team and be the cornerstone on which accurate delivery of materials enables all customers to find what they are looking for or get a referral to the staff that can best help them with their needs.
As a Administrative Support Assistant II your job will be spending most of your time at customer-facing service points, welcoming a diverse population of teens with respect and dignity, and creating a library space where all are free to explore and connect. You’ll make positive experiences for teen library customers by checking out and returning books, registering customers for library cards, ordering books and other library materials from other agencies, and responding to customer questions about using library resources. You will assist customers with both library and personal technology.
You’ll use library technology and other tools to efficiently process and route library materials with accuracy and attention to detail while staying current on circulation policies and procedures. You’ll grow as you support the library's goal of being a learning organization by participating in approved learning opportunities, and support through action the Library's mission, vision and values and goals. You may assist with shelving, collection maintenance, and outreach projects as requested.
Your primary location will be the Teen Library at the Central Library, however, DPL reserves the right to reassign locations based upon operational and/or staffing needs at any given time.
About Our Branch
The Teen Library is a newly developed, dedicated space at the Central Library for teens (ages 13-19). The Teen Library is approximately 10,000 square feet on the second floor of the Central Library with meeting spaces, gaming stations, a project room, and an adjacent young adult (YA) collection. We strive to create an inclusive environment for teens to connect, learn, and be themselves.
About You
Our ideal candidate has:
  • Ability to thrive in an active work environment with constant public contact.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, positive attitude, cultural sensitivity, compassion, and a sense of humor when working with customers and colleagues of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Ability to work closely with a team to complete daily, weekly and monthly tasks.
  • Ability to use workplace technology effectively including email, calendar, internet, databases, video conferencing, and other software, plus a willingness to learn new technology as needed.
  • Skill in communicating and presenting information to customers with varying levels of experience and knowledge using principles of Trauma Informed Care.
  • Ability to adapt to the ebb and flow of materials intake and stay focused on repetitive tasks in a busy and physically-demanding environment.
  • Ability to prioritize and creatively solve problems with attention to detail.
  • Ability to pass a background check after the offer to hire has been made.
  • A demonstrated commitment to developing and maintaining a welcoming environment for young people and teens.
