The Bird and Wildlife Aircraft Strike Hazard (BASH) role supports the Installation Support Services (ISS2) contract at Eareckson Air Station (EAS), located in Shemya, Alaska.

Job Summary: The BASH position controls wildlife to minimize aircraft exposure to potentially hazardous bird strikes.

Essential Job Duties & Functions

  • Control wildlife interfering with aircraft operations following the Bird Aircraft Strike Hazard (BASH) program.
  • Monitor bird movements.
  • Minimize hazards from bird strikes and terrestrial animals.
  • Follow established guidelines for base organizations to decrease airfield attractiveness to birds through habitat modification.
  • Identify and report high-hazard situations to appropriate base agencies following established procedures.
  • Disperse birds and wildlife on or near the airfield using active and passive dispersal techniques.
  • Utilize bird scare ammunition and shotguns following established guidelines.
  • Disseminate Bird Watch Condition information to all aircrews.
  • Follow the guidance of federal and state permits to haze and take birds.
  • Handle bird and animal remains using published safety precautions.
  • Survey and reduce pests through the use of traps and EPA-approved pesticides.
  • Assist in maintaining drainage ditches to clear to deter wading birds and emergent vegetation.
  • Assist in Airfield Operations to include passenger, cargo, and flight line services.
  • Perform related work as assigned
Accountable For

  • Demonstrated skill in the safe use of firearms and pyrotechnics.
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately identify birds.
  • Demonstrated ability to safely remove bird and animal carcasses.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain appropriate unattractive ground cover for birds, geese, and other waterfowl.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and follow directions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and safely with others.
  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication.
Work Conditions

The incumbent regularly talks and hears to understand instructions, provide information, and respond to safety warnings. Work conditions require the employee to stand, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, taste or smell, and work on scaffolding and ladders. The incumbent may frequently lift and move objects weighing up to 35 pounds without assistance and heavier objects with assistance.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years' experience on flight line operations
  • Valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Must pass a State of Alaska Pesticide Core Exam within 70 days of employment.
  • Experience in conducting airfield checks and bird/wildlife hazing operations (BASH)
  • Experience in safe operations and maintenance of a shotgun
  • Obtain and maintain a National Agency Check with Inquires.
  • U.S. citizen.
  • Ability to successfully pass a pre-employment physical and drug test.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of experience operating forklifts and K-Loaders.
  • Previous experience working on a military installation.
  • Previous experience working in a remote location.
  • Safety training experience.
