Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Chief Nursing Officer or designee, and the close supervision of a Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, House Supervisor, Relief House Supervisor, Nurse Manager, or Physician, the Medication Aide administers select medications and treatments and provides basic nursing and restorative care.
Responsibilities:
  • Administer medications and treatments within the defined scope of practice, adhering to administration guidelines and physician orders.
  • Review resident allergies prior to administering medications/treatments.
  • Verify the correct medication received from the pharmacy before delivery to residents.
  • Document administration or refusal of medications/treatments and notify a nurse of any medication/treatment refusal immediately.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, supervisors, County employees, elected officials, attorneys, law enforcement, judges, other agencies, and the public.
  • Comply with Civil Service policies and regulations, collective bargaining agreements, County policies, and laws to create a cooperative, safe, respectful, and quality work environment.
  • Adhere to all nursing and DCHC policies and procedures.
  • Encourage and support residents in maintaining or regaining independence, accommodating individual choices, and assisting in maintaining personal belongings.
  • Document vital signs, intake/output, care/restorative nursing, and other nursing actions in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Notify a nurse immediately of any resident physical or behavioral changes (e.g., difficulty breathing or waking, confusion, skin breakdown, cuts, bruising, bleeding, blisters).
  • Assist residents with hygiene needs and activities of daily life, involving them in decisions associated with their level of care.
  • Assist residents with restorative nursing based on care plans.
  • Assist with admissions, transfers, and dismissals, including required documentation completion.
  • Comply with all confidentiality and privacy requirements/regulations.
  • Attend and actively participate in rounds, daily reports, and assigned meetings.
  • Provide superior customer service to residents, visitors, and coworkers.
  • Maintain workspace, resident room, common space, and medication/treatment cart cleanliness.
  • Report immediately to a supervisor any suspected abuse, neglect, exploitation, and/or misappropriation of resident property.
  • Accompany residents to on/off-site appointments and planned facility activities.
  • Observe and adhere to all safety and emergency procedures, reporting any unsafe conditions to a supervisor.
  • Participate in quality assurance and performance improvement (QAPI) activities.
  • Attend continuing education courses and seminars to maintain Medication Aide and Nursing Assistant certificates in good standing.
  • Answer phones as needed and assist residents in placing calls.
  • Report to work at the assigned location with regular, consistent attendance.
  • Perform other duties as directed and assigned.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of a State-certified 75-hour Nursing Assistant course required and maintained in good standing.
  • Attainment of a State-certified 40-hour Medication Aide certification class and exam required and maintained in good standing.
  • Completion of the 10 required competencies of a Medication Aide as defined in Nebraska State Statute within the first 14 days of employment required.
  • Basic life support/cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification required at the time of hire and must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Must be at least 19 years of age.
  • Six (6) months of experience as a medication aide or one (1) year as a nursing assistant preferred.
  • Experience with electronic medical records preferred.
