Location: Kent Campus Hospital

Status: Full Time 80 Hours

Shift: Day/ Evening

SALARY RANGE: 17.31 - 25.01HOURLY

General Summary:

The Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) is a healthcare employee that performs specific job responsibilities under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist. The Pharmacy Technician is responsible for providing pharmacy services, including, but not limited to distributing pharmaceuticals, performing inventory control, preparation and distribution of intravenous admixtures, maintenance in the Clean Room, compliance audits, providing customer service, and maintaining pharmacy records. The Pharmacy Technician works as a part of an interdisciplinary patient care team, and under direction of the Pharmacy Technician Supervisor. The Pharmacy Technician may assist in the training of staff under the direction and guidance of the Pharmacy Technician Supervisor and/or designee. The Pharmacy Technician position will utilize and extend knowledge and competency while performing technical pharmacy functions of the Inpatient Pharmacy.

Responsibilities:

1. To be completed by certified technician only: Compounding: a. Complies with all USP 797 guidelines and Bayhealth policies and procedures. i. Growth media testing ii. Glove test iii. Gowning procedures iv. Didactic Testing b. Cleans and maintains the sterile compounding areas in the accordance with USP 797/USP 00 and Bayhealth policies and procedures. i. Cleans all counter tops, laminar flow hoods with acceptable disinfectants periodically as outlined in the policy. ii. Maintains a work area that is neat and clean. c. Stocks sterile compounding area with intravenous solutions, additives and all other supplies utilized in the area. d. Completes dispense prep by documenting lot number, expiration date and waste. e. Prepares on demand I.V’s in a timely manner per department guidelines.
2. Distributes, manages and stores pharmaceutical products throughout the organization. Distribution and management of pharmaceuticals include the following: a. Interprets the patient-specific labeling correctly in regards to medication, dose, dosage form, packing size and quantity. Using the previous information, accurately prepares the final product for review by a registered pharmacist. b. Replenishes medications in the Automated Distribution Cabinets accurately. i. Follows departmental standards to ensure secure delivery of controlled and non-controlled substances. ii. Scanning percentage c. Manage medication delivery process to include: i. Timely and accurate delivery of medications. ii. Timely retrieval of discontinued medications. d. Complete unit dose cartfill and first dose dispensing activities. e. Completes dispense preparation.
3. Pharmacy Information Systems: a. Maintain competency on functionality of the pharmacy information systems, automation dispensing and other pharmacy technologies (Ex. Pharmacy Keeper). This includes report generation, trouble shooting, label and patient profile review.
4. Support Function: a. Exchange of crash carts and/or restock pharmaceutical trays (tech check tech). b. Expiration date checking to include central pharmacy, automation distribution cabinets, other medication storage areas and various kits (ex. Transport kit, etc.). c. Support the department as needed for inventory processes (ordering, receiving, patients own medications and etc.). d. Prepare medications by repacking oral suspensions, solutions and tablets into unit dose packaging.
5. Patient Safety / Performance Improvement: a. Supports Bayhealth by maintaining a High Reliability Environment by following all safety measures i. Keeps a clean and organized workspace. Utilizes department equipment in appropriate matters ii. Report near misses iii. Report any identified patient or employee safety issues. b. Performance Improvement i. Documents and completes 95% or higher of all required records (refrigerator temperature checks, pharmacy inspections, Pharmacy Keeper logs and etc.). c. Understand and follow all hazardous material related issues (USP Chapter 800).
6. Training and Education: a. Participates in on-the-job training of new pharmacy personnel including pharmacy technicians, students, residents and pharmacists. b. Participates in ongoing educational activities to acquire and validate knowledge. 6. Critical Thinking and Development: a. Answers phones and address issues of concerns or directs the phone call to appropriate personnel. b. Demonstrate an understanding of the prioritization of work based upon patient need, efficiency and pharmacy policies and procedures. Independently handles routine problem scenarios within the scope of the pharmacy technician responsibilities.
7. Critical Thinking and Development: a. Answers phones and address issues of concerns or directs the phone call to appropriate personnel. b. Demonstrate an understanding of the prioritization of work based upon patient need, efficiency and pharmacy policies and procedures. Independently handles routine problem scenarios within the scope of the pharmacy technician responsibilities.
8. All other duties as assigned within the scope and range of job responsibilities


Required Education, Credential(s) and Experience:

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED
  • Credential(s): CPHT within 12 months of hire, if not already obtained; Sterile compounding competence within 18 months of hire
