Job Summary

Coordinate the cataloging, processing, finding, reporting on, and accessing of all library resources. This is a tenure-track position.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • LOUIS System Administrator for the library's management system, SirsiDynix Symphony, configuring it to accurately reflect and access the library's physical and electronic collections. Request LOUIS support when needed. Disseminate announcements and reports from LOUIS to Library staff. Communicate with other LOUIS System Administrators. Attend the LOUIS Users Conference and the LOUIS System Administrators meetings.
  • Supervise all bibliographic cataloging and advise in the use of the library catalog.
  • Electronic resources: Periodically and systematically check real access to each journal and database, on- and off-campus.
  • Administrator of EBSCO Discovery Service, EBSCOhost, and EBSCOadmin Holdings Management, from which the electronic resources portion of the catalog is derived.
  • Supervise employees of Technical Services to catalog, process, and make library resources accessible.
  • Quality-check all new bibliographic records in the catalog.
  • Conduct ongoing enhancement of existing catalog records, ensuring better discoverability through content notes, summaries, author descriptions, and accurate subject headings.
  • Maintain the subject and name authority database within SirsiDynix Symphony so that it reflects and defines catalog contents.
  • Load large batches of vendor- or LOUIS-provided catalog records for database expansions, trials, or new packages of electronic resources.
  • Provide catalog support during deselection or inventory projects.
  • Verify LOUIS’s weekly additions to the ULM catalog of electronic resources.
  • Report library holdings to OCLC WorldCat.
  • Will participate in Reference services as scheduled.
  • Keep a separate list of ULM journals and their years of coverage.
  • Keep a renewal calendar for electronic resources.
  • Coordinate cataloging of new materials for the Literacy Lab / Multicultural Library collection located in Walker Hall 2-37. Train staff in the circulation of materials (a shared responsibility with the Head of Circulation).
  • Provide usage statistics for electronic resources.
  • Provide the Director and library staff with any requested statistics, title lists, or other analytical data.
  • Provide subject bibliographies or accreditation reports to academic departments via the liaison librarians.
  • Communicate publisher and vendor announcements and system outages to the ULM Library Public Services staff.
  • Advise the Library staff working on government documents.
  • Develop or adopt departmental goals, plans, priorities, standards, and training materials
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the department.
  • Report department activities and statistics to the Library Director.
  • Participate in continuing professional development.
  • Provide reference service to students, faculty, and others from a central counter or via email (including evenings and weekends).
  • Participate in state and university required training and testing.
  • Other duties as assigned, including working in other departments of the Library as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

A Master’s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association (ALA)-accredited school. At least five years’ experience in library cataloging, using standardized cataloging rules, establishing serials subscriptions with vendors, and working with government publications. Excellent communication skills as evidenced by experience in working with faculty, students, and other library patrons. A vision of the patron experience in the discovery and retrieval of resources. Prefer experience using SirsiDynix Symphony, OCLC WorldCat, OCLC Connexion, MarcEdit, Microsoft Excel, and a second master’s degree.
