Job Description

Director of Youth & Family Ministry

Reports to: Director of Operations

Status: Part-Time (20 hours/week)

Includes in-office hours T/W/Th 10a-2p; Sun 6p-9p

Current Staff Meeting 1st and 3rd Tuesdays 6p-9p

*To allow for a work environment free from distractions where required duties can be performed, employees are expected to have made arrangements for dependents and can not be the primary caregiver to adult or child dependents during working hours.

Sanctuary Columbus is seeking an energetic, creative, and organized follower of Jesus to lead our youth ministry called The MX. The MX provides a safe and fun environment that addresses the current needs of teens and inspires them to follow Christ. Sanctuary Columbus Church serves youth and families with a youth program that teaches students the values and beliefs of Micah 6:8 - to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God. This role requires the individual to be available for in-person programming with youth in 6th through 12th grade .

JOB DUTIES

The Director of Youth and Family Ministry may perform some or all of these duties or other job-related duties as needed.

Administration & Direct Ministry Leadership

  • Develop and oversee weekly in-person Sunday evening MX experience to ensure spiritual growth and maturity for all youth (includes set-up, tear-down, teaching, managing volunteers).
  • Champion intentional faith-forming connections between teens and adults through creating and developing small groups and other mentoring relationships.
  • Maintain data on families and children in the church database (Church Center).
  • Maintain exceptional written and verbal communication with staff, youth volunteers, and parents utilizing SCC tools and systems (ie Planning Center Online).
  • Develop and maintain policies and procedures to ensure safety for MX students, families and volunteers.
  • Assemble and manage curriculum for Sunday evening MX gatherings.
  • Encourage, equip and develop resources for parents of youth to help support spiritual formation outside of the Sunday experience.
  • Maintain accountability of Family Ministries budget and expenses along with Director of Children and Family Ministries.

Volunteer Management

  • Cast vision for youth ministry that incorporates the mission of Micah 6:8.
  • Schedule leadership meetings with MX volunteers.
  • Recruit, train, onboard, coach new MX volunteers to ensure programs are organized, staffed and led well.
  • Nurture the youth ministry volunteer team with care and authenticity, helping them grow spiritually, emotionally and vocationally while training them to be passionate disciplers of teens.
  • Maintain a monthly schedule of volunteers.
  • Communicate with all volunteers to provide important updates, reminders, and schedule, as well as encouragement, support and shepherding.
  • Develop and execute occasional non-Sunday events to minister to youth and/or families per year (example: Dime-a-Dog night).

Planning & Connections

  • Make it a priority to grow spiritually in your relationship with Jesus.
  • Attend worship services consistently to attend to your soul.
  • Attend and contribute to Sanctuary staff meetings, 1-1 meetings with the Director of Operations, and collaborate with other staff members.
  • Attend church meetings and events (including but not limited to: Meet Sanctuary, All-Church meeting, Prayer services, Framily Day, etc).
  • Plan, recruit and lead quarterly MX events for MX students and families (e.g. Super Bowl Party, Youth Sunday, Youth Conference, etc).

The Ideal Candidate:

We are looking for a Youth Ministry’s Director who has the capacity to juggle lots of responsibilities and ability to prioritize them effectively. This person will have the ability to connect with students and adults, good attention to detail, an understanding of youth development, great communication skills (written and verbal) and a desire to work collaboratively.

Specific considerations include:

  • An unblemished criminal history (working with youth will require extensive background check)
  • Be a dedicated follower of Jesus, reflecting a love for God and people
  • An understanding of biblical theology consistent with Sanctuary Columbus
  • Willingness to become a member of Sanctuary Columbus
  • Participation in group life in the church
  • The ability to teach and respond to unexpected questions from students
  • Strong organizational skills and follow-through
  • A respect for confidentiality
  • A capacity to both lead and empower others to lead
