Job Description

Position Summary:
Under general supervision of the Communications Supervisor, the Dispatcher accomplishes the Communications Department’s strategic objectives by planning and organizing the assigned functions required to operate and maintain departmental activities and services. Incumbent is expected to perform most work in a fairly independent manner. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Assist with providing a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Specialize in communication work in receiving and dispatching accurate information to appropriate department and/or personnel.
  • Provide communication services in utilizing multiple channels and frequencies.
  • Operate multiple line switchboard.
  • Perform fast, efficient, and accurate response on incoming calls and messages.
  • Provide communication services 24 hours a day, seven days a week, weekends, and holidays.
  • Process and prioritize incoming calls for ambulance, fire, police, security, maintenance, grounds, and administration.
  • Maintain contact with all units on assignment, maintain status and location.
  • Coordinate chopper landing for patient transport.
  • Communicate accurate address and locations.
  • Provide written reports on all incidents.
  • Maintain accurate “On-call” listing for various departments.
  • Maintain radio/telephone communication.
  • Monitor and maintain hospital surveillance cameras.
  • Maintain communication with security personnel and dispatchers.
  • Maintain appropriate records and logs of all radio transmission, telephone calls, key logs, equipment logs, housing key logs and other records.
  • Assist with Law Enforcement on any incidents that occurs on hospital campus with prior authorization from Administration Department or Designated Administrator and/or established policy and procedure.
  • Provide professional services to visitors coming onto the compound.
  • Provide proper directions and offers only need-to-know information to visitor and/or patients.
  • Participate in and attend in-services and educational programs.
  • Meet and comply with organizational policies and procedures.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Notify supervisor of needed materials and/or supplies.
  • Perform clerical support duties (typing, filing, faxing and copying).
  • Assist with Emergency Response Team, committees, groups, as directed.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and Certifications:
  • Knowledge of applicable tribal, federal, state, county and local laws, regulations, including Joint Commission Accreditation.
  • Knowledge of business English, proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, and mathematics.
  • Knowledge of reporting system.
  • Knowledge of community and hospital campus (street names, locations.)
  • Knowledge of different panels and all alarms within the communication center.
  • Knowledge of policies on all alarm systems.
  • Knowledge of police ten codes and operation of portable radio.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in the English language both verbally and in writing with staff and the general public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals and demonstrates team-building skills with empathy and enthusiasm.
  • Ability to answer questions and provide necessary information for assistance.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Ability to speak the Navajo language and/or familiarity with the Navajo Way.
  • Ability to work independently and meet strict timelines.
  • Ability to speak clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to think and act quickly, calmly and accurately in an emergency.
  • Ability to complete excellent documentation.
  • Ability to handle emergencies and other stressful incidences as described in the Safety and Security Manual.
  • Skill in operating business computers and office machines, including in a Windows environment, specifically Word, Excel, Access, and presentation software (such as PowerPoint).
  • Skill in preparing, reviewing, and analyzing reports.
  • Skill in operating multi-line switchboard.
  • Skill in multi-tasking efficiently.
  • Skill in analyzing problems, projecting consequences, identifying solutions, and implementing recommendations.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to walk, sit, reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk and/or run. The employee occasionally is required to stand; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment:
Work is generally performed in an office with moderate noise level. Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required.
