Entry-Level Tool & Die Group Leader Rotational Program

Work Arrangement :

Onsite: This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to their assigned plant on a full-time basis.

The Team:

GM is an industry leader in manufacturing and tool & die. We have 11 stamping & tool and die shops in the US alone. We have our own dedicated die design and construction facility as well as a state-of-the-art tryout facility. We produce parts ranging from small inner components to large outer sheet metal such as body sides, doors, hoods, etc. Each of these requiring a high-quality level in dimensional and surface quality. We are pursuing the addition of tool and die group leaders to 3 of our facilities to meet our future demand. We are seeking individuals with a technical knowledge that can plan, assist & lead a team of die makers in our sites that range from new die construction, new die tryout, die maintenance, press maintenance and continuous improvement as well as engineering changes during the life of a vehicle program. We range from die design through the entire production run of a vehicle. We have a vast range of facilities, equipment, and experience available that builds into great experiences and careers in the tool & die field. Safety is most important to us followed by quality in our facilities. Leading safety and quality of work is of high priority in the daily activity.

What You’ll Do:

We are continuing our already established TRACK (Technical Rotation and Career Knowledge) training program to create individuals with a strong and broad knowledge & experience in tool & die as well as to create a network of people to work with for years to come. Each candidate will work in their home facility and travel a few times to our die construction facility, secondary tryout facility & assembly plants for additional related training during their first year. During the first year they will be learning the tool & die trade both from that location and in a classroom atmosphere in a central location. The second year they will work in their home plant rotating across the different die & press maintenance areas and across all 3 shifts. Following completion of the program they will be placed in their assigned area to lead a skilled team.

This will provide a great learning experience and build tool and die knowledge & press maintenance to prepare each person to be successful.

How You’ll Make an Impact:

  • Lead group of UAW tool & die makers in their daily activities
  • Ensure safe work practices are followed and continually improved
  • Provide guidance on building, tryout & maintenance of dies
  • Interact / lead quality improvement activities to provide high quality parts to the customer
  • Interact & problem solve with maintenance trades to optimize throughput with our equipment
  • Interact & problem solve with production teams to problem solve throughput initiatives
  • Support business plan deployment
  • Implement best practices, lessons learned and support manufacturing innovations
  • Operate tool machinery in safe manner during the build process

Specific physical requirements of the position include the ability to:

  • Walk and stand for prolonged periods of time.
  • Read standardized work instructions, operate machines and tools, and perform quality inspections.
  • Promptly detect and respond to safety instructions, alarms, and signals.
  • Wear personal protective equipment, for example: safety glasses, gloves, hats, ear plugs, and safety shoes.
  • Work in a loud manufacturing environment that is not climate controlled (conditions can be hot or cold).
  • Frequently and repetitively bend, twist, kneel, crouch and reach to perform work.
  • Lift or carry materials weighing up to 15 pounds and periodically carry or lift materials weighing up to 40 lbs.
  • Occasionally sit, climb (including ladders and lifts) and drive vehicles and equipment.

Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate or Bachelor degree or Technical Certification in Machine Technology, related tool and die program, Manufacturing Engineering or Mechanical Engineering
  • Graduation date between Spring 2023 and December 2024
  • Ability to work full time, 40 hours per week & willing to work overtime
  • Effective communication skills both technical & personal
  • Technical ability to work with your hands to convey knowledge
  • Tool & die experience is a bonus but not required as we plan to provide this through the track program.
  • Willingness to work in a plant environment.
  • Ability to learn the technical trade of tool & die.
  • Ability to work any of the 3 shifts.

Compensation: The compensation information is a good faith estimate only. It is based on what a successful applicant might be paid in accordance with applicable state laws. The compensation may not be representative for positions outside of New York, Colorado, California, or Washington.

  • The salary range for this role is $81,000 - $89,000 . The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
  • Bonus Potential: An incentive pay program offers payouts based on company performance, job level, and individual performance.
