Summary

The position of Facilities Maintenance Technician is responsible for the general maintenance of our buildings (facilities) and grounds. Although most of the time of the Facilities Maintenance Technician will be spent outdoors, some indoor work will also be assigned.

This position reports to the Water Treatment and Recovery Supervisor and ultimately, the Environmental Manager.

The individual in this position will possess a working knowledge of mechanical safety, as well as understanding of the overall campus and the buildings and equipment within. 

The individual in this position must be able to work alone, unsupervised, as well as working in a team environment.  Individual must be able to follow directions and instructions from environmental and maintenance department personnel.  Good working relationships and communication are key ingredients to the success of the individual holding this position. In addition, they must be able to attend all scheduled training.

The individual(s) in this position will be required to fully understand the purpose and operation of the process systems and equipment in the plant, along with having the ability to make decisions based on sound judgment when a situation dictates.  It is imperative the person(s) conduct themselves in a manner that ensures alertness and constant awareness of the safe operation of the equipment and its surroundings.                                                                                                     

The work area includes inside and outside of the facility predicated on work requirements.  Weekend and overtime work is common and may be required to meet operational goals and training needs. During winter months, working nights for snow removal will be required. 

 

Key Responsibilities

Ensures there is no injury to self or others by following safe work practices (including Standard Operating Procedures) and policies.

Food Safety is everyone's responsibility. Ensure Food Safety by following all Good Manufacturing Practices and policies.

Attend and participate in all training activities for the position.  Ensure the acquired skills and knowledge are applied.

Ensure sanitation of equipment and housekeeping of the entire facility.

Ensures self-compliance with Company policies, Standard Operating Procedures, and the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Responsible for the overall external maintenance and appearance of Grand Forks campus.

Keeping grounds clean including snow removal, lawn mowing, etc.

Responsible for maintaining painted surfaces both inside and outside of the facility.

Light/Moderate maintenance items, both indoors and outside.

Completes work orders as assigned and plans and schedules additional work as needed. 

Performs preventive maintenance in/on the facility.

Researches, procures, and maintains inventory of supplies to complete work orders.

Prepares work environment and areas properly in preparation for work orders to be completed.

Maintains work area and equipment in a clean and operable fashion.

Accurately fills out and maintains the daily log.

Communicates with Department Managers, Shift Managers, Supervisors, Team Leaders, and other department personnel regarding project progress. 

Effectively utilize unscheduled and scheduled down-times.  Must be able to schedule a comprehensive list of tasks/duties for downtimes.

Work on special projects as assigned (hanging doors, signs, and other minor constructions, insect- and rodent-proof doors).

Typical Education
High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
Relevant Experience
3+ years related experience and/or training
Requirement

Must have and maintain a valid driver's license

Other Information

Must have previous experience in maintenance, carpentry, construction, or other trades skills related to maintain buildings and grounds.

Must have successfully completed the Job Skill Evaluation to begin training in the position.

Must complete the Structured Job Training program within recommended time-frame to remain in the position permanently.

Must be able to demonstrate the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and calculate percentages to make proper adjustments and calibrations, as required.

Must be able to read, understand, and communicate in English in a manner to successfully complete job duties.

Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, the weight of tools and materials.

Must be able to work with hazardous and corrosive chemicals in small areas.

Must be able to tell time and be able to convert regular time to military time.

Must be able to use a computer and successfully navigate through various applications. Must be proficient at computer system data entry.

Must be able to maneuver in close quarters and climb stairs, ladders, and catwalks on a regular basis.

Must be able to work in extreme environments (cold, hot, humid, and slippery.)

Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision. Must be a self-starter, motivated, and self-sufficient.

Must be able to identify hazards and report to appropriate personnel.

Must be able to read and understand mechanical drawings.

Must have a working knowledge of basic safety practices.

Must be able to identify and distinguish colors.

Must be able to work in confined spaces, work at heights for long periods of time.

Must be able to supply own hand tools.

Must be able to qualify for a Forklift license.
