Job Summary and Qualifications

I.Position Summary:

Surgical First Assistants practice under the direction of physicians and surgeons.

The Surgical First Assistant must have equivalentqualifications, competence and function in the same role as employed individuals performing the same or similar services at the facility, as defined by facility job description.

Acts as the primary assistant to a surgeon during a surgical procedure.Scope of Service may include:

    • Assists the surgeon by providing retraction and aiding exposure of the operative site.
    • Anticipates the moves of the surgeon and assists in the safe and efficient completion of the surgical procedure
    • Facilitates hemostasis of the surgical site by performing suction, irrigation and sponging the operative site during a surgical procedure
    • Assists with skin or external suturing and stapling
    • Assists with securing drainage systems and dressings
    • Demonstrates Clinical and Service excellence behaviors to include code of HCA conduct core fundamentals in daily interactions with patients, families, co-workers and physicians

    Surgical Services Duties:

    The Surgical First Assistant will demonstrate:

    1.Safe environment for patients

    a.Uses at least two ways to identify patients before treating or performing a procedure

    b.Labels containers used for blood and specimens in the presence of the patient

    c.Labels all medications and solutions on and off the sterile field in perioperative and procedural settings

    d.Participates in the preprocedure process to verify the correct procedure, for the correct patient, at the correct site / side and involves the patient in the verification process when possible.

    2.Surgical First Assistant Skills as directed by supervising physician

    3.Assist with positioning, prepping, draping of patient

    4.Provide visualization of the operative field by the use of retraction, scalpel, scissors, or electrocautery, as directed by the surgeon

    5.Assists the surgeon in providing hemostasis by:

    a.Applying electrocautery tip to clamp or tissue in a safe manner, as directed by surgeon

    b.Sponging and utilizing pressure

    c.Providing suction

    d.Applying clamps on vessels and the tying or electrocoagulation of them, as directed by the surgeon

    e.Placing suture ligatures in tissue, as directed by the surgeon

    6.Provides closure of subcutaneous and skin layers. Performs suturing and stapling

    7.Assists the surgeon at the completion of the procedure by:

    a.Affixing and stabilizing drains

    b.Cleansing the wound and applying the dressing

    c.Assist with application of cast, splints, and other devices

    8.Inserts and removes urinary catheter and nasogastric tubes

    9.Injects local anesthetic

    10.Infection prevention

    a.Practices consistent hand hygiene

    b.Uses personal protective equipment (PPE)

    c.Maintains current immunization for influenza

    d.Complies with Isolation precautions

    e.Complies with required surgical attire

    f.Maintains sterile field

    11.Ensures quality of care to patients and families representing FRMC mission and values

    12.Promotes satisfaction of internal and external customer

What qualifications you will need:

I.Minimum Requirements:


Education:Surgical First Assistant is agraduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist educational program and maintains Certified Surgical First Assistant licensure through a nationally certified and/or state-licensed certification to practice with thesupervision of a physician.

Licensure/Certifications:Current Basic Life Support (BLS) upon hire. Certification required.

Experience:Preferred 1 year OR Experience. Excellent communication (verbal, written), interpersonal, organizational, leadership, exceptional interpersonal relations and problem solving skills required.


  • Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
  • Vocational School Graduate
  • Certified First Assistant, or Certified Surgical First Assistant (CFA)
