Job Description

Summary of Purpose: Participate in the daily operations of the shelter primarily by working alongside Foster team in the placement of animals into foster homes.

Duties (Essential Functions):

  • Responsible for daily cleaning and sanitation of assigned animal and common areas with emphasis on disease control protocols; provide spot cleaning and animal areas throughout work schedule

  • Provide animals with appropriate housing, food, water, bedding, toys and other mental stimulation and enrichment, social interaction with humans and, where appropriate, members of own species

  • Handle dogs and cats of all sizes, ages, temperaments and needs safely and appropriately

  • Assist the Foster Manager with the daily operations of the Foster Programs, including foster volunteer recruitment, animal placement, documentation, communication, scheduling, and adoptions.

  • Help to ensure all animals in the foster program receive timely medical care and treatment

  • Using online softwares, such as Acuity and Airtable, to process new applications for foster volunteers in a timely manner

  • Cultivate trusting relationships with foster volunteers, which require on-going assistance, coaching, and moral support to current foster families

  • Maintain a well-rounded knowledge of the shelter population, and use that knowledge match foster volunteers with a KHS animal that will be best for them and that will also best benefit the animal and shelter

  • Answer phone calls, texts, and emails in a polite, courteous, and timely manner

  • Help maintain inventory of supplies and communicate with Foster Manager to when supplies are needed

  • Assist with maintaining a full and healthy cat colony at the Purrfect Day Cat Cafe and assist with the Working Cat program as needed

  • Monitor after hours Foster Emergency Line and assist fosters with any medical emergencies

  • Use Petpoint software and employee communication systems to keep accurate animal inventory, write animal behavior and other memos, and maintain effective staff communication

  • Assist the Foster Manager with various foster-based programs such as Adoption Ambassador, Fospice, etc

  • Follow and maintain excellent knowledge of organization cleaning, sanitation, and disease prevention protocols in order to provide a healthy and safe environment for animals and people

  • Assist (as needed and directed) in supporting foster, set-up, transport, behavior, and other critical shelter operations

  • Unpack, sort, and organize donations as needed

  • Drive KHS vehicles when needed

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications/Requirements:
General dog and cat knowledge preferred
Great interpersonal skills both in person and by phone with clients, staff and volunteers
Intermediate computer skills with the ability to prepare reports and maintain an efficient records system
Excellent organizational and analytical skills
Ability to work independently with little direct supervision
Demonstrated attention to detail, ability to process paperwork accurately and efficiently
Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
Punctual and dependable
Humane attitude towards animals
Ability to manage the emotional aspect of end of life services and humane euthanasia, and support staff in high-emotion circumstances
Accept, support, and represent KHS core values, programs, policies and procedures
Must possess a valid driver’s license and clean driving record and be willing to drive KHS vehicles
Background check required

Physical Demands/Working Environment
Individual will have extended periods of sitting, talking and listening.
Frequent bending, reaching, kneeling, walking and standing on a regular basis while performing job functions.
Frequently lifts, carries or otherwise moves and positions objects weighing up to and exceeding 50 lbs.
Includes working in an indoor desk environment as well as working with animals in a kennel/shelter setting (indoor/outdoor) with potential for exposure to allergens, zoonotic diseases, and cleaning chemicals
