Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARY:
Performs and participates in decontamination, cleaning, inspecting, assembling, packaging, sterilization, storage and distribution of reusable surgical instrumentation and equipment. Performs these duties in accordance with Grand Island Regional Medical Center policy and procedure manual.

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.

2. *Follows the standards of operation of the department are in compliance with the standards set by regulatory agencies.

3. *Performs duties independently, works proficiently without supervision and helps train new employees.

4. *Identifies and uses appropriate methods and solutions to sort, disassemble, decontaminate, rinse, and disinfect instruments and clinical equipment.

5. *Appropriately handles garbage, linen and biohazardous material. Maintains safety standards. Universal Precautions are followed through wearing the appropriate PPE.

6. *Correctly assembles, protects, wraps, containerizes, peel pouches and labels instruments.

7. *Identifies and inspects instruments for cleanliness and functionality.

8. *Properly handles and stores sterile supplies, equipment and instruments.

9. Selects appropriate sterilization methods. Knows and follows correct principles of sterilization.

10. Ensures sterilizers are maintained, drains checked daily and machines cleaned weekly.

11. *Properly documents and verifies sterilization loads and biological tests to determine the efficacy of the sterilization process. Follows standards on biological and chemical indicators.

12. Assists with keeping supplies in stock and letting the appropriate personnel know in a timely manner when stock is low.

13. Maintains a clean orderly work area. Completes assigned housekeeping duties.

14. Returns supplies and instruments not used to proper location.

15. *Works closely with Materials Management on making sure OR inventory is stocked appropriately.

16. *Prints preference cards and assembles case carts with supplies and instruments for surgical procedures.

17. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.

18. Participates in meetings, committees and department projects as assigned.

19. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1. Knowledge of regulatory requirements, including all state, federal and accreditation regulations.

2. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.

3. Skill in attention to detail, vigilance and meticulous care on the job.

4. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

5. Ability to perform crucial conversations with desired outcomes.

6. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel and medical staff.

7. Ability to problem solve and engage independent critical thinking skills.

8. Ability to maintain confidentiality relevant to sensitive information.

9. Ability to prioritize work demands and work with minimal supervision.

10. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or GED required. Certification in Sterile Processing preferred but not required.

Location: Bryan Health · Sterile Processing
Schedule: Full-time, Day shift, M-F 9:30-6:00
