Job Summary:
To assist the nurse by providing care and treatment of patients in accordance with UMMC policy and nursing practice laws and regulations. To provide direct and indirect patient care under the guidance and direction of the registered nurse, including specific duties/procedures in relation to the care and treatment of patients. To implement components of the plan of care through performance of technical procedure and skills. To perform clerical/receptionist responsibilities and tasks as assigned. To provide patient care to psychologically impaired or emotionally disturbed individuals under the direction of a charge nurse or nurse manager in accordance with the institutional policies and procedures. To perform job duties in accordance with the medical center's purpose.
Education & Experience
High school graduate/GED and six (6) months experience working in a healthcare hospital tech (or equivalent) position

or

Completion of a nursing assistant course

Certifications, Licenses or Registration required: N/A
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Verbal and written communication skills. Ability to provide patient care and services. Ability to react calmly in emergency situations. Knowledge of medical terminology. Skill in use of personal computers and related software applications. Interpersonal and customer service skills. Ability to input and verify pc data.

Responsibilities
  • Performs all duties of a hospital tech i, which include but are not limited to the collection and recording of vital signs, activities of daily living, turning patients, linen changes
  • Performs a wide range of clerical duties in addition to those performed by hospital tech i, which may include scheduling appointments and arranging transportation for patients.
  • Collects and delivers specimens and supplies to appropriate locations within the acceptable time frames as directed.
  • Cleans and assembles equipment. Appropriately charges for supplies/equipment and reports equipment in need of repair to nurse manager.
  • Performs venipuncture, blood glucose testing, and point of care testing in accordance with established procedures. Performs computerized EKGS according to policy and procedure and provides copies for the patient's chart and the heart station.
  • Assists the RN in meeting patient's elimination needs by performing urinary catheter removal, administering enemas, and by emptying bedpans, foleys, and ostomies.
  • Operates sterilization equipment and performs sterilization on instruments including identification and packaging.

Requires occasional exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, occasional handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, occasional exposure to bio-hazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, occasional working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional travelling to offsite locations, occasional activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, occasional work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, frequent bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 75 pounds, occasional crawling, frequent crouching/stooping, occasional kneeling, frequent pushing/pulling, frequent reaching, occasional sitting, constant standing, frequent twisting, and constant walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
