Job Responsibilities

  • Reading Blueprints and Plans: Understand and follow detailed blueprints or structural plans to know where to place iron and steel beams.
  • Erecting Structural Frameworks: Assemble and erect the steel frames that form the skeleton of buildings, bridges, and other structures.
  • Welding and Bolting: Use welding equipment to join metal parts or use bolts to secure steel beams and columns.
  • Cutting and Fabricating Metal: Cut metal components to specific dimensions and fabricate or modify parts using tools and machinery.
  • Positioning and Aligning Steel: Use cranes and other rigging equipment to lift, move, and place steel beams and columns into position.
  • Inspecting and Maintaining Structures: Check metal frameworks for structural integrity and perform maintenance or repairs as needed.
  • Safety Procedures: Follow strict safety protocols to prevent accidents and injuries, including the use of harnesses, safety nets, and personal protective equipment.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Physical Strength and Stamina: Capable of handling heavy materials and working long hours, often in challenging physical conditions.
  • Precision and Attention to Detail: Ability to work with precision and care, ensuring that all parts of the structure meet design specifications and safety standards.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Quick thinking and problem-solving abilities to address issues that arise during construction.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in using tools and technology, including welding equipment, metal cutters, and cranes.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work effectively as part of a team, coordinating with other workers to efficiently and safely erect structures.

Working Conditions

  • Outdoor Work: Most work is performed outdoors, which can be in various weather conditions and at considerable heights.
  • Risky Environment: The job involves working at heights, near heavy machinery, and potential exposure to hazards such as falling objects and electric shocks.
  • Travel: Iron workers often travel to different job sites, which can involve both local and distant locations depending on the project.
  • Variable Hours: Work hours can vary, with possibilities for overtime and night shifts depending on project deadlines.
