Job Description

Overview

The Corrections and Reentry Research Program at RTI International is searching for a Justice Researcher to assist with research and evaluation projects related to corrections and reentry. Given our large and growing portfolio of projects, we are looking to hire multiple staff members at this position level.

The program is specifically interested in candidates with knowledge and practical experience in the areas of correctional policy and practice, social science research methods, evaluability assessment and/or evaluation design, qualitative and/or quantitative analytic skills, and strong communication and scientific writing skills. Additional experience may include providing technical and training assistance; gathering data and information to support research projects and proposals, including literature reviews; engaging in facility logistics work; supporting site visits, including leading interviews; contributing to quantitative data collection and analysis; and writing scientific papers, reports, presentations, and other scholarly products.

This position can be located at our headquarters location in Research Triangle Park, NC, one of our regional offices, or anywhere in the U.S. as a telecommuter.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and contribute to quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis tasks.
  • Lead and contribute to proposals related to corrections and reentry.
  • Lead and contribute to written research products including technical reports, peer-reviewed manuscripts, and products developed for practitioners and non-technical audiences.
  • Conduct project management tasks, such as managing project budgets in collaboration with financial analysts, tracking project timelines and deliverables, and managing quality control processes.
  • Communicate effectively with justice system professionals, representatives from funding agencies, justice-involved individuals, and other stakeholders to plan and execute successful research projects.
  • Contribute to the professional development of RTI staff by mentoring less experienced individuals.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
:
  • Bachelor’s degree (criminology, psychology, sociology, public policy, or a related field is required) and 5 or more years or relevant experience; Master’s degree (criminology, psychology, sociology, public policy, or a related field is required) and 3 or more years of relevant experience; or PhD (criminology, psychology, sociology, public policy, or a related field is required).
  • Experience contributing to research projects in the areas of corrections and reentry.
  • Proficiency with qualitative and/or quantitative data collection and analysis.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with demonstrated capability to present work at national conferences and/or publish in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to work successfully and collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams and with criminal legal system personnel.
  • Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to obtain proper security clearance(s) and pass required background investigation(s) as noted by contracts.
  • To qualify, applicants must be United States citizens or Permanent Residents (seeking citizenship status actively and maintained residency in the United States for at least 3 out of the past 5 years) per client requirements for this role.

Desired Skills:
  • Experience conducting systematic reviews and/or meta-analyses of the correctional literature preferred but not required.
  • Experience collecting, reviewing, and assessing correctional policies and practices preferred but not required.
  • Experience collecting and analyzing administrative correctional data preferred but not required.
  • Experience collecting and analyzing primary qualitative and quantitative data from correctional staff and justice-involved individuals preferred but not required.
  • Experience leading or contributing to federal, state/local, or foundation-funded grant or contract proposals preferred but not required.
  • Topical expertise in the following areas preferred but not required: institutional corrections; restrictive housing; correctional psychology and mental health services; other correctional and reentry-focused programming, including education- and employment-focused services; correctional officer well-being and workforce issues; and health/healthcare among corrections populations or in correctional settings.
