Description of Job

GENERAL SUMMARY:
This provides technical expertise and staffing support to the Natural Resources (NRE) program (including AQT(Aquaculture), ENV(Environmental Science), FSW(Fire Science), GIS(Geographic Information Systems), NRE (Natural Resources), OUT(Outdoor Studies), REC(Recreation) by overseeing the purchase and maintenance of indoor and outdoor laboratory equipment and supplies for the NRE program, preparing and ensuring proper functionality of daily indoor and field exercises, keeping supply inventories, and coordinating field lab logistics such as risk assessment, transportation and permitting. This position will also provide field trip staffing and instruction in field techniques in small group setting. This position coordinates with professionals in the field for outreach events and field site logistics, and oversees the scheduling of work study students. The work unit will also help create laboratory exercises and develop field lab content.


This position is a half-time position at the Larimer Campus, Fort Collins, CO. This position will work 20 hours per week and is fully benefited.

DUTIES:

Lab Preparation and Setup
Based on learning outcomes, create a learning environment in both indoor and field labs that takes concepts taught in lecture classes and demonstrates those concepts in the labs. Determine field lab locations based on criteria set forth by faculty. Develop and prepare lab demonstrations and simulated learning activities, based on identified learning outcomes. Communicate actively with faculty to: obtain lab schedules, prepare labs, identify equipment need conflicts, determine desired learning outcomes and develop or revise lab exercises, stay apprised of additional needs, and trouble-shoot problems.

Manage Inventory including Equipment Maintenance & Repair
Manages inventory. Ensure proper storage, maintenance and repair of equipment used in the NRE program. This includes managing proper disposal of materials. Create and maintain inventory databases for all materials and supplies and ensure that all supplies are ordered and received promptly. Maintain all records, track all items ordered and verify accuracy of all NRE Procurement card (PCard) statements. Attach all supporting receipts, invoices, packing slips, and other supporting paperwork to monthly PCard statements, obtain required signatures, and send to FRCC Purchasing and Contracts Coordinator for filing/records storage. Create/update maintenance schedule. Repair equipment as needed. If in house repairs aren’t possible determine if equipment can be repaired by outside vendor. If repair is not possible, research and make recommendations regarding purchasing of new equipment. Orient new faculty with proper use and storage of equipment.

Student Oversight in Labs
Supervise students at field sites. Demonstrate proper use of equipment. Work closely with faculty to develop teaching strategies that will increase student’s ability to transfer lecture concepts to real experience. Provide feedback to students regarding proper equipment use.

Supervise Student Employees
Supervise student employees, this includes: coordinating work schedules, approving time sheets, on-boarding and training individuals, providing professional oversight and mentor-ship.

Program and Logistical Support
Coordinates NRE marketing, social media and outreach. Works with faculty lead to assist marketing for the NRE program, including attending tradeshows, outreach events, and working with local business and industry partners. Creates promotion material for program.
Provide logistical support for NRE program. This includes: coordinating travel to and from field labs; ensuring proper permits are in order; research and make recommendations to risk management; submitting paperwork for reports; creating contingency plans as needed.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Four years of experience in an occupational field related to Natural Resource or Environmental Science. Effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary for success in this position. (Part-time experience will be pro-rated). Do not use “SEE RESUME” statements on the application; your application must be completed in detail documenting your experience.

SUBSTITUTION:

A combination of related education and/or relevant work experience will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis. (A COPY OF YOUR TRANSCRIPT VERIFYING THE REQUIRED CREDITS MUST BE RECEIVED BY APPLICATION DEADLINE, IF SUBSTITUTION IS USED TO MEET THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS)

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES:


  • Natural Resources:
    Determination of lab location; Set-up of Labs; Instructing & Assisting students in proper use of equipment and understanding lab assignments.
  • Instructing and Communication: Based on learning outcomes, create learning environment in labs that takes concepts taught in lecture classes and demonstrate those in labs. Monitoring and assisting students during lab; Communicating with faculty and staff regarding learning outcomes; lab preparation; department needs. Marketing program to community and students.
  • Planning and Organizational Skills: Determining lab locations; Ordering and Maintaining lab supplies and equipment in a timely manner. Ensuring permits and other paperwork is complete accurately and timely.
  • Supervising student staff: Hiring, training, coaching, and supervising students; following through on accountability and expectations; providing clear direction and oversight.
  • Problem Solving/Independent decision making: Make decisions based on best practices, policies and procedures related to needs of department and students.
  • Active Learning/Active Listening: Collaborating with faculty regarding lab setup based on learning outcomes; adjust teaching/demonstration styles based on student needs. Monitoring students during lab. Working with vendors to fix or replace equipment.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT & CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Must submit to and successfully complete a pre-employment background check and a motor vehicle report. Felony convictions or conviction of crimes of moral turpitude or convictions of misdemeanors related to the job duties may disqualify you from consideration for this position. Should your background check reveal any charges and convictions, it is your responsibility to provide Front Range Community College, Office of Human Resources with an official disposition of the charges. A valid Colorado driver’s license will be required. This position will be required to travel to field sites.

Supplemental Information

NOTE: An essential function of this position requires exertion of up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. This position will hike over rough terrain while carrying over 20 lbs.
