ASTRONOMY (BL-AST-IUBLA)
Astronomy has a long history at Indiana University, beginning in 1856 with Daniel Kirkwood. The department was founded in 1895. Our doctoral program has produced over 100 Ph.D. astronomers engaged in teaching and research worldwide. The department is a major partner in the WIYN 3.5-meter and WIYN 0.9-meter research telescopes atop Kitt Peak near Tucson, Arizona.
Our faculty and students maintain a full program of activities in teaching, research, and outreach. We offer undergraduate and graduate degrees in astronomy and astrophysics, with courses in stellar and extragalactic astrophysics, dynamics, cosmology, exoplanets, and computational astrophysics. The department is home to 10 faculty, a few dozen undergraduate students, and about 20 graduate students.
The historic campus Kirkwood Observatory dates from 1901, and its 12-inch refracting telescope is now used for public viewing nights during spring, summer, and fall. We welcome visitors! Our office and classroom spaces are found on the third and 4th floors of Swain Hall West.
