Position Overview

The Lead Clinical Laboratory Technical Specialist will provide leadership services with the technical specialist team, and within the clinical laboratory areas. This role will perform all functions of a Clinical Laboratory Technical Specialist while mentoring and supporting Clinical Laboratory Technical Specialist team members. The Lead Clinical Laboratory Technical Specialist will ensure timely turnaround for the various tasks the technical specialist team is assigned to. This position will work directly with Supervisor, Clinical Laboratory Specialist to act proactively to anticipate and resolve issues related to efficiencies in throughput, staffing, and laboratory processes and elevate any noted issues to affected stakeholders.

Shift: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm

Essential Duties

Include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Perform laboratory processes without direct supervision.  Use routine and specialized automated and non-automated laboratory procedures and techniques after training and competency assessments.
  • Lead the planning, writing, and executing of various laboratory procedures, work instructions, verifications, and validations relating to laboratory tests, workflow, instrumentation, and sample handling and transportation.
  • Represent the Technical Specialist team on cross-functional projects/initiatives.
  • Identify key stakeholders amongst the clinical lab support teams and ensure their needs are accounted for with new projects and changes to laboratory processes.
  • Coordinate with Technical Specialists, lab team, and other departments to ensure consistent lab health and instrument performance as it relates to sample and result handling, workflow, and turnaround time.
  • Serve as immediate source of troubleshooting support to the technical laboratory teams and assist technical laboratory leadership in determining sources, solutions, and corrective actions for errors and issues.
  • Ensure quality and timeliness of patient test results by investigating problems involving specimen collection, result reporting, and test processes. 
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret sample and instrument data and provide this information to other departments and customers, to support quality monitoring and issue resolution.
  • Working with the change control process, coordinate and support changes to assays, workflows, and sample handling, and provide support to leadership and team during transitional phases.
  • Build and maintain systems for training and production purposes, such as LIS, Exact Sciences system software (ESSS), and other platforms.
  • Assist with training and competency of employees.
  • Mentor and coach Technical Specialist development.
  • Support multiple test systems.
  • Conduct check-in meetings with members of the Technical Specialist team.
  • Ability and means to travel between Madison locations.
  • Comply with laboratory procedures, such as CAP, CLIA, and OSHA regulations.

  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance.

  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds for approximately 25% of a typical working day.
  • Ability to work seated for approximately 50% of a typical working day. Ability to work standing for approximately 50% of a typical working day.
  • Ability to work on a mobile device, tablet, or in front of a computer screen and/or perform typing for approximately 80% of typical working day.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology or relevant field as outlined in the essential duties, or Associates Degree plus 6 years, or High School diploma/GED plus 8 years relevant industry experience.
  • 6+ years of experience in a laboratory that is relevant as outlined in the essential duties.
  • Professional working knowledge of the theory of laboratory procedures, CAP, CLIA, and OSHA regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the Essential Duties of the position with or without accommodation.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2+ years of relevant experience within the Exact Sciences Clinical Laboratory.
  • 1+ years of experience formally or informally leading people or initiatives in a clinical laboratory setting.
  • Lean Six Sigma and/or Project Management experience.
  • Possession of ASCP certification or appropriate certification from one of the nationally recognized certification agencies.

Salary Range:

$74,000.00 - $118,000.00

 

The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - WI - Madison on a full-time basis. In addition, this position is bonus eligible, and is eligible to receive company stock upon hire as well as annually.
