Schedule: Full-Time

Location: Remote with 25% required travel

Reports to: Director of Policy & Research

Salary: $102,000 - $127,000 with full health benefits for employee and dependents, employer-funded retirement plan, remote work stipend, and 28 days of vacation

M4BL POLICY TEAM

The Movement For Black Lives (M4BL) Policy Department is dedicated to supporting the development and implementation of visionary and uncompromising local, national, and international policy objectives aimed at addressing the various ways Black people are harmed while also lifting up a vision that speaks to the desires and needs of our people. The Policy Department supports the Policy Table which does the following:

  • Create Black-centered, community-grounded spaces where folks can collectively build power and strategy around policy interventions and demand articulations.
  • Coordinating, supporting, and elevating local policies that divest in policing, invest in strong communities, ensure community control, create pathways for alternatives, demand an end to the ongoing war inflicted on our communities, and demand economic justice, political power, and reparations.
  • Work to change the national narratives around key policy areas and serve as a hub for innovative and visionary thinking inspired by the need to challenge existing federal policy, laws, and regulations, struggle to find alignment with regard to national demands, and collaborate on the development of transformative national policies
  • Internationalize the policy agenda wherever there is an opportunity in the spirit of a Black-internationalist approach and politic

POSITION SUMMARY

The Policy Department Manager will play an integral role in providing coordination of all of the moving parts within the M4BL Policy Department and Table. The Policy Department Manager will work closely with members of the Policy Department and Policy Table Leadership Team and will report to the Policy Table Director to help actualize the Policy Department’s agenda.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Membership

  • Oversee management, coordination, and engagement of table membership including:
    • Intake of new members
    • Communicate with, and facilitate communication among, Table members
    • Member 1 on 1’s
    • Track and coordinate table-wide engagement
    • Support development and management of Policy Department budget
    • Support planning of Policy Table and Department meetings, calls, and convenings (in-person and hybrid) including working with the leadership team and Director to plan content, secure experts, carry out logistics, etc


Engagement

  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive Policy Table recruitment, outreach, and engagement plan with consultation from the Policy Director and Policy Table Leadership Team.
  • Develop metrics to track progress on recruitment and engagement and conduct regular assessments of Table members
  • Represent the Policy Table on internal policy department working groups, and internal M4BL committees and groups
  • Represent the Policy Department in external coalitions and meetings

Policy Development and Analysis

  • Support the creation of Policy Department content including memos, white papers, briefs, and reports pertaining to the Vision for Black Lives and the M4BL Policy Department Agenda
  • Support policy analysis upon request to external partners on issues contained in the Vision for Black Lives
  • Support policy analysis requests within the M4BL ecosystem

General

  • Support documentation of notes from Policy Table Leadership Team and Policy Department meetings
  • Support Policy Director in coordinating the Policy Table Leadership, including scheduling meetings, onboarding new Policy leadership team members, and sending out communication in consultation with the Policy Director
  • Support other policy table work groups and Policy Department Fellows where necessary, including scheduling meetings and capturing notes

REQUIRED
QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated commitment to Black liberation and M4BL’s goals and principles (including abolition, Black queer feminism, and anti-capitalism)
  • 5-7 years experience in policy development and analysis, preferably across multiple areas of policy
  • Subject matter expertise in one or more areas of policy outlined in the Vision for Black Lives, including, but not limited to, education, economic development, housing, reproductive justice, governance, climate/environmental policy, public finance
  • Experience developing and managing project and/or organizational budgets
  • Experience in drafting articles, reports, and white papers
  • Lobbying experience at the local (municipal/county), state, or national level (preferred)
  • Strong project management skills
  • Self-directed, and able to work collaboratively
  • Detail-oriented
  • Very well-organized, structured, and highly proficient in technological tools
  • Must be able to multitask, and work during odd hours and late days during rapid response moments
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in politically-sensitive and fast-paced environments
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise excellent political judgment and have strong emotional intelligence and evaluation skills
  • Must have exceptional writing skills and ability to communicate effectively to the Black community and within the Black community
  • Background in social science, data analysis, and/or research is desirable
