Job Description

The New Venture Analyst is part of the Center for Technology Transfer and Commercialization (CTTC) at Vanderbilt University and is a key individual contributor responsible for working closely with and in support of the CTTC New Ventures Team to spearhead the development and implementation of strategies to commercialize a promising Vanderbilt technology via a new venture.
Vanderbilt CTTC's mission is to provide professional commercialization services to the Vanderbilt community, thus optimizing the flow of innovation to the marketplace and generating revenue that supports future research activities, while having a positive impact on society.
We accomplish this by serving as an efficient and effective conduit for the transfer of promising intellectual property to industry; contributing to regional economic development by licensing locally and supporting new venture creation; and encouraging greater translational research collaborations between academia and industry.
NOTE: A Term position is a staff position that exists for a period longer than six months but is not expected to last beyond one year. Although a position may exist for a specified or indefinite period, staff who accept term positions are not guaranteed employment for the entire period; they are employed for indefinite periods within the limit of the appointment. There are no guarantees of continued employment, either within the term or when the term ends.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform market assessments of the proposed technology to determine potential size of commercial impact, competing products, business models, strategic partners and investors, and contacts within such partners in preparation for active marketing and development of the technology.
  • Further develop and refine business plans, pitch decks, and financial models previously developed by the New Ventures team, including by conducting customer discovery interviews and other activities to inform and validate hypotheses in those plans.
  • Work with the clinical principal investigator to understand and plan for clinical trials and regulatory applications related to the proposed technology.
  • Actively reach out to potential strategic partners and/or investors to establish contacts and initiate discussions regarding the proposed technology and related research collaboration opportunities to fund the new venture commercializing the proposed technology.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education is necessary.
  • An MBA from an accredited institution of higher education or equivalent work experience is highly preferred.
  • At least two years of experience working (i) with a new or early-stage company and/or (ii) in a business development support position in a university, a national lab, or in industry, whether through internship, training program, or otherwise is preferred.
  • Familiarity with US agencies and their entrepreneurship grant programs (e.g., Dept. of Commerce, Dept. of Defense) is preferred.
  • Experience with various capital investment vehicles used with academic-related start-up companies is preferred.
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication, project management, conceptual, and analytical skills are necessary.
  • Ability to promote a positive culture of support and compliance with internal and external regulatory requirements is necessary.
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task in a collaborative, cross-functional, fast-paced environment is necessary.
