Job Description

The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is seeking a Park Maintenance Trades Worker III in the Park Service Area section to perform park maintenance functions within a specified geographic Neighborhood Service Area. This employee will work with a team responsible for refuse collection, basic horticultural functions, park maintenance, and enhancement projects.


Specific duties include:

  • Leading other trades workers for small projects, special assignments, maintenance, and weather emergencies;
  • Using hand and power tools to perform tasks;
  • Driving tractors and trucks, pickups, dump trucks and refuse trucks;
  • Cleaning rest rooms and picnic shelters, collecting refuse and hauling materials, and repairing park equipment;
  • Interacting with park users while preforming maintenance;
  • Reporting and recording completed work data into work order system using a tablet; and
  • Performing Landscaping, ground maintenance, and other duties as assigned.

Minimum: Six (6) months' experience performing general labor duties.

Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:

  • Operating dump trucks, pick-up trucks, refuse trucks and/or tractors;
  • Providing training in general labor duties to other team members;
  • Landscape or grounds maintenance; and/or
  • Cleaning and maintaining tools and vehicles.

Possession of one or more of the following Certifications/Licenses is preferred:

  • VA Registered Technician license;
  • Pesticide applicator certification; and
  • Commercial Driver License (CDL) A or B.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Applicant must possess or obtain within 12 months of appointment to this position, a valid Class "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Any employee hired without this license will be appointed as a trainee, until the license is obtained; and
  • Applicant must obtain a valid Virginia Registered Technician's License within 12 months of appointment in position.

Pre-employment Requirements:

  • Selected candidate must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or they must provide a copy of official driving record. Any offer of employment will be contingent upon a favorable review of driving record.
  • Selected candidate must pass a pre-employment Physical and drug screening, and will be subject to drug screening, at such times during employment, as required by law.
  • A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

Working Conditions:

  • The worker performs activities inside and outside.
  • The worker is subject to cold (below 32 degrees) for periods of more than one hour and/or temperatures above 90 degrees for periods of more than one hour. Consideration should be given to the effect of other environmental conditions such as snow, rain, hail, wind and humidity.
  • The worker is subject to hazards: Including a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals.
  • The worker is subject to one more of the following conditions: Fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gasses or poor ventilation, oils, and other cutting fluids.

Physical Requirements: Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION


Work Hours : Core hours 6:30am - 3:00pm, Monday through Friday. Employee may be required to work some evening and weekend hours. Employee must be available for callback and holdover in emergency situations including those that are weather related.
