JOB PURPOSE: To assist the pharmacist in all duties related to the Pharmacy Department that is allowed by the State of Massachusetts.
MINIMAL QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Eligibility Requirements: High school diploma or equivalent.
Have completed a board approved training program or have completed a minimum of 500 hours of employment as a pharmacy technician trainee.
Passed board-approved Pharmacy Technician Assessment Examination administered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or pharmacy employer.
Maintains a Massachusetts Pharmacy Technician Registration at all times.
Experience: Minimum of 500 hours of employment as a Pharmacy Technician or Technician Trainee.
Technical Skills: The ability to identify drugs as prescribed by a provider through training.
The ability to interpret provider orders of medication with the guidance and approval of the Pharmacist.
The ability to distribute narcotics to the Medication Nurse according to Massachusetts State Laws.
Read and write English.
Communicates efficiently and effectively.
Age and Disability: Must be capable of servicing patients of all ages and disabilities.
Their monitor, who assumes responsibilities for disabilities’ specific care, accompanies patients with major disabilities.
Other: Accurately fills provider orders, following pharmacist verification.
Properly restocks medication and narcotics to each unit as required.
Inspects medication rooms on a continual basis, and provides reporting on findings monthly, maintaining hospital standards.
Purchases medication and pharmacy supplies, demonstrating cost effectiveness.
Monitors for supply shortages and reacts appropriately.
Receives outside vendors’ medication and medical supplies as ordered, and stores in proper areas.
Maintains pharmacy inventory at a proper level.
Reclaims medications from discharged patients and restocks appropriately in the Pharmacy.
Inspects medication monthly for expired dates and returns them to proper vendors.
Maintains on a daily basis the After-Hours Pharmacy cabinet, ensuring that enough medication is in stock to be used in case of emergency when the Pharmacy is closed.
Enters data into the pharmacy computer, and performs clerical duties relating to the department.
Acts as a liaison between pharmacy and other departments/team members.
Maintains records in a neat and complete manner.

Mild to moderate degree of professional and external interaction with other departments.
Environmental Demands: Working condition are pleasant and comfortable as 90% of the time is spent indoors.
Essential Physical/Mental Demands: Delivers filled patient cassettes and other supplies up to 30 pounds in weight.
Manual Dexterity Required: The ability to be able to repackage medication in a rapid and accurate manner.
