Job Description

Schedule:
Tuesday - Friday with a rotating Saturday
8:00 AM - 6:30 PM (40 hrs/wk)

Department: Clinic Trials Sample Mgmt - 606

**If you qualify for a higher technician level the exact compensation will vary based on skills and experience.

Job Summary
Works under general supervision to ensure proper handling of all research specimens received at ARUP's central facility and prepares specimens for laboratory testing. The position includes such functions as matching patient information, data entry, aliquoting, scanning documents, and assist in handling complex issues that arise in the Clinical Trials Sample Management department. In addition, this position involves manifesting shipments and supporting senior processing technicians as needed.

Essential Functions

Attends Clinical Trials Sample Management team and staff meetings.

Facilitates communication between POD members and the PRS and/or Lead.

Ability to work under minimal supervision.

Opens/closes and manifests inbound shipments and properly documents any shipping and/or other violations.

Coordinates with Specimen Processing to ensure shipments are received in a timely manner.

Ensure POD stations are adequately cleaned and stocked with required supplies.

Immediately processes specimens as they become available and follows the appropriate procedures for all manual and electronically transmitted orders.

Labels deidentified specimens and requisitions appropriately.

Able to recognize and appropriately handle all specimen types per corporate and departmental procedure.

Properly documents all specimen receipt information as outlined in departmental procedures.

Properly operates the centrifuge and biological safety cabinet.

Proficient in all applicable ARUP Applications.

Proficient in the Internal Test Directory (ITD) as related to accessioning and client submissions/inquiries.

Proficient in all current departmental LIS applications and functions.

Aliquots specimens according to procedure using the proper safety equipment.

Coordinates with Clinical Trials and other study coordinators to ensure inbound studies are packaged and submitted correctly.

Properly utilizes the ARUP Auto-Ordering application and ensures all data is properly uploaded into ARUPs accessioning application.

Back up Quality Review as needed.

Knows ARUP and UHSC laboratories and can determine their locations, hours of operations, and general functions (or able to find such information using departmental information on Nucleus).

Ability to make sound judgement decisions, conferring with senior staff member when needed.

Other duties as assigned.

Physical and Other Requirements

Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.

Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

Mobility: The person in this position needs to move between work sites and inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.

Effective communication skills

PPE: Biohazard laboratory environment that requires use of personal protective equipment in accordance with CDC and OSHA regulations and company/departmental policies.

ARUP Policies and Procedures: To conduct self in compliance with all ARUP Policies and Procedures.

Abide by the Code of Conduct as outlined in the ARUP employee handbook.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Fine Motor Control: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.

Vision: Having close, far, and peripheral visual acuity to perform a variety of tasks such as make general observations of depth and distance.

Color Vision: Perception of and ability to distinguish colors

Regular and reliable attendance.

Reliable and dependable performance.

Ability to work well with others.

Ability to work all required overtime.

Qualifications

Education

Required:

High School Diploma or Equivalent or better.

Experience

Required:

Must be able to type 30 WPM

After completion of training, must successfully pass the departmental competency testing exam with a score of 90% or higher

Must be able to maintain department quality requirements

Preferred

Processing at or above 20 specimens or tests per hour (using the department’s productivity report), and not exceed the departmental threshold for errors or attendance infraction issues OR 3 years at ARUP in a Technical Operations role

Pay: From $16.85 per hour
