Position Description

This position announcement will be used to fill a Full-Time, Permanent, Non-Represented, Recreation Specialist vacancy within the Department of Recreation and Parks.


This position is responsible for assisting in the planning, organizing, and directing of various recreational and athletic programs.

NATURE AND VARIETY OF WORK

Work includes assisting with administering comprehensive recreational and athletic activities for children, youth, young adults, and adults; preserving the cleanliness of related facilities; and directing the work of part-time and seasonal recreational staff and is required to exercise professional judgment in carrying out administrative duties. Work is performed under the direction and review of superior through analysis of operating records, field inspections, and conferences.

Work of this class may require frequent bending, stooping, reaching, walking, and may involve standing for long periods.

Examples of Duties and Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Assist with planning, organizing, advertising, and directing various recreational programs, including athletic programs and activities.

Assists with hiring, scheduling, and evaluating part-time personnel including the coordination of assignments of game officials.

Assist with the planning of special events, tournaments, dances, athletic leagues, dramatic presentations, arts and crafts, and related activities.

Prepares advertisements for a variety of recreation programs.

Prepare schedules for part-time and seasonal staff.

Prepare requisitions for necessary materials and supplies; monitors expenses and revenues.

Schedules meetings with community groups for recreational and school facilities. Directs the scheduling process of allocating time to community groups within the framework of departmental policy

Work with civic groups and social agencies on matters of civic and recreational interest; visit schools, churches, social organizations, and individuals to explain recreational programs and stimulate interest.

Attend staff conferences, professional meetings, and other meetings; instructs various activities as required.

Provides input to supervisor concerning budgetary needs; prepares and maintains necessary records and reports.

Assists in the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and processes related to the scheduling of operations, including resolving conflicting requests for the use of public facilities.

Perform related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of the methods and techniques of recreation programming; and the philosophy and objectives of public recreation.

Knowledge of the techniques and rules of various community-oriented athletic activities.

Knowledge of a variety of recreation and cultural activities suitable for children, youth, young adults, and adults.

Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions to be considered for employees and participants in recreational and athletic programs.

Knowledge of budgeting and record keeping.

Ability to lead and instruct children, teenagers, and adults in a variety of recreational activities.

Ability to adhere to general program standards and objectives and to innovate, when necessary, to meet specific situations.

Ability to maintain order and to solve disciplinary problems.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, civic and social agencies, and the public.

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION: A bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in recreation administration or a related field


EXPERIENCE:
One (1) or more years of experience in general recreation or physical education programs


ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
A valid non-commercial motor vehicle operator's license.

Supplemental Qualifications

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following:


1. Experience in sports leagues scheduling


2. Experience in sports league management


3. Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office and Google Suites
