Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under moderate supervision, this position is responsible for ensuring that customers receive prompt, friendly, and thorough service. This includes maintaining adequate levels of inventory, pricing and stocking of merchandise, displaying and demonstrating the proper use of merchandise, and keeping areas clean and clear of unattended boxes, trash or misplaced inventory, which may contribute to unsafe or undesirable shopping/working conditions.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


  • Greets all customers in an expeditious and courteous manner. Assists all customers by escorting them to the requested or related item, answering all questions, and suggesting appropriate additional information or merchandise to further assist the customer. Checks all merchandise for flaws or missing parts prior to handing the item to the customer. Maintains awareness of customer flow and requests additional support when needed.

  • In accordance with all safety and manufacturer instructions, demonstrates proper use of merchandise as requested or needed by the customer. Maintains awareness for other customers and surrounding obstacles while demonstrating merchandise.

  • Maintains a clean and orderly work space for the entire section of the store assigned. This includes monitoring and taking appropriate action for misplaced items, obstructions in the aisles, moisture on the floor (especially on rainy days) and other unsafe conditions that may arise. As time allows, assists fellow teammates with maintaining other sections of the store.

  • Monitors all sales space for proper replenishing of merchandise. In accordance with procedures, replaces merchandise as appropriate to the level of sales. Checks to make sure that appropriate merchandise is properly marked with price tags or sku numbers.

  • Provides special services for the customer including cutting applicable materials to requested size, mixing paint, preparing estimates, calling other stores for availability of merchandise, arranging for deliveries and carrying large or bulky items for the customer to the register and car. Directs the customer to appropriate personnel for special order items.

  • Maintains continuous awareness of all activity within the assigned area. This includes discretely monitoring unattended customers and taking appropriate action when suspicious activity is observed of customers, as well as fellow-team members.

  • Answers incoming calls to the department/store and articulates the proper information to the customer. If necessary, directs the call to the requested party, takes an accurate and complete message, and/or relays the necessary information to the caller. Handles each call in a professional, courteous and timely manner.

  • Maintains constant awareness of all unsafe activities. Reports unsafe working conditions and accidents immediately to the proper authority. Fully cooperates with all investigations.

  • Assists with building displays for sales, promotions, and other special events.

  • Prepares Merchandise Department Transfer (MDT) Request Forms for all merchandise transfers between stores.

  • Assists with periodic verification of inventory for the entire store. Assists with prepping designated areas, keying data, and organizing work teams to efficiently conduct the process.

  • Prepares and processes requested merchandise for delivery.

  • Attends store meetings, training sessions, etc. as arranged by the Company.


OTHER FUNCTIONS:


  • Provides assistance to cashiers as needed.

  • Assists with training other team members.

  • Maintains flexibility in learning other functions throughout the store.

  • Assists with maintaining a clean parking lot. This includes collecting shopping carts and picking up rubbish.

  • Maintains a working knowledge of applicable state and federal laws, regulations, and issues applicable to retail industry. Maintains a clear understanding of how each law and regulation applies to the day to day responsibilities of this position.

  • Maintains a thorough knowledge and understanding of general business, office and departmental procedures, including all Company policies and procedures as they apply to this position.

  • Improves and maintains technical competencies by reading professional literature, attending seminars and specialized studies, as appropriate.


QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:


  • High school education diploma, GED or equivalent directly relevant retail experience for at least one year.

  • Minimum of twelve continuous months of customer service or home improvement product knowledge position(s) i.e., construction industry, landscaping, etc. Preferably in a hardware or home improvement setting.


OTHER SKILLS:


  • Excellent verbal communication skills, including listening. Must be able to project a clear and friendly voice.

  • Excellent customer service and telephone skills.

  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and maintain a high degree of judgment, especially when assisting customers with unusual or infrequent requests. Must be able to work effectively with difficult customers and work effectively with distractions.

  • Well organized and attentive to detail. Must be able to properly label merchandise, match numbers and codes, and distribute and place signs in accordance with instructions.

  • Ability to analyze and solve problems. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions presented in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

  • Proven ability to work with mathematical concepts. Ability to apply fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Must be able to comprehend formulas.

  • Ability to operate a forklift, paint machine, pricing gun, key cutting machine, tape rule, box cutter, straight edge, chain cutter, wire cutter, screw driver, and other industrial equipment.

  • Ability to operate a calculator, telephone, personal computer and cash register, as needed.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule.

This position reports directly to the department supervisor. On a daily basis, this position interacts with external customers and may interact with managers and staff within various departments of the organization. Additionally, this position may have interaction with industry related venders and consultants.


WORKING ENVIRONMENT:


This position works in a retail store environment with the following characteristics:

Air conditioning, with the exception of lumber, garden, and other designated areas,

Fluorescent lighting, Moderate noise level, Fumes, Dust, and Chemicals

Warehouse with moderately high levels of dust and noise.

While the company will strive to provide advance notice of all work schedules, this position will be required to work a varied schedule as the work load dictates. No sales associate is guaranteed a specific shift, day of the week, or number of hours per week.
