Fremont School District 79 is actively hiring school bus drivers to drive students to and from school Monday-Friday. Fremont School District is located in Mundelein, IL, and consists of four schools that educated over 2,200 students from preschool to eighth grade.

REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Have or obtain a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) class “B” with airbrakes, passenger and school bus endorsements. (Training will be provided)
  • Must have a valid driver’s license for the past three (3) years (no breaks) prior to application. If experience is outside of Illinois, then a transcript of the license must be provided to cover that period.
  • Must be in good physical condition and pass an annual physical, including a drug screen, as required by law. This includes vision and hearing tests.
  • No DUI or reckless driving charges during the past five (5) years.
  • No more than one (1) speeding ticket or moving violation during the past year.
  • Pass a criminal background check that includes fingerprinting.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the general supervision of the Director of Transportation, the Bus Driver has the primary responsibility for ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of the students, staff, and volunteers during bus transportation to and from all destinations. It is also the role of the Bus Driver to: guarantee that the bus is clean and in proper working condition at all times; follow safe and efficient bus routes; ensure all children are in age-appropriate child safety restraints; maintain all transportation records required by the District; follow all disciplinary procedures; ensure bus evaluation drills are successful; and evacuate children in case of an emergency.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Observe and obey all Federal and State laws and regulations for school buses and all traffic laws.
  • Must be in accordance at all times with all requirements to obtain and maintain a School Bus Driver permit and Commercial Drivers License.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of children and adults being transported to and from all destinations.
  • Complete a daily comprehensive inspection of the bus, reporting any conditions of concern to the Director of Transportation before transporting students.
  • Ensure that the communication device is in proper working order before each trip.
  • Ensure the bus always has sufficient fuel levels, no less than half (½) a tank.
  • Operate the bus so that road and safety regulations are always followed; report any traffic violations to the Director of Transportation immediately.
  • Ensure all children are in age-appropriate child safety restraints at all times during transportation.
  • Follow safe bus loading and unloading procedures.
  • Follow procedures to guarantee no child is left alone on the bus without adult supervision at any time, including ensuring all children have departed the bus at the end of all bus routes (morning, midday, evening, and during field trips and other special trips).
  • Keep the bus clean and free of debris; follow other bus cleaning procedures.
  • Routinely inventory bus emergency and first aid supplies and equipment and report needs to the Director of Transportation.
  • Identify those persons authorized by the parents/guardians to receive the children. Deliver children only to authorized persons at authorized stops.
  • Assist in transportation training, as assigned by the Director of Transportation.
  • In case of accidents/emergencies, evacuate children according to written and practiced procedures.
  • Report all accidents and/or property damage immediately to the Director of Transportation.
  • In the event of an accident, ensure that medical emergency procedures are followed; complete a written accident report as required by procedures and policies.
  • Attend and participate in training and other continuing education and professional development opportunities, including an 8-hour (new driver) or 2-hour annual school bus class (existing driver).
  • Maintain positive rapport with all members of the school community.
  • Effectively explain rules and procedures to students and parents.
  • Adapt to and respond to stressful situations in a positive and effective manner.
  • Report all disciplinary actions or concerns to the appropriate authority in accordance with school district policies and procedures.
  • Exhibit good attendance and follow proper procedures in the event of an absence.
  • Follow route schedule and timelines.
  • Adhere to, enforce, and observe all policies and practices established by the Board of Education.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
