Job Title:
Slide Librarian - Surgical Pathology
Job Summary:
To maintain a complete and up to date filing of all surgical pathology slides for UMMC and Grenada UMMC pathology slides on the UMMC campus. Will be responsible for all aspects of storage, retrieval, and accountability for slide and tissue block disposition.
Education & Experience
Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED: NA
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Familiarity with medical terminology, accurate filing skills for both alphabetical and numerical systems, ability to use basic computer programs, ability to multitask and prioritize

responsibilities:
  • Accurately files slides each day. Maintains slides and blocks in manner that facilitates easy retrieval and in accordance with laboratory standards.
  • Retrieves slides for tumor boards, patient clinical conferences, and at the pathologist's request. Maintains records of all as removed from storage
  • Plans ahead for space needs; orders cabinets for slide storage as needed
  • Arranges for transfer of slides over five (5) years of age to a warehouse storage facility after consultation with manager
  • Maintains integrity of slide storage room and files. Restricts access to said storage area. Maintains neat and orderly work area.
  • Refiles slides immediately after clinical conferences
  • Pulls tissue blocks for referral testing. Assists with send-outs and shipping as needed. Maintains accurate and adequate records.
  • Prepares and maintains procedures for tasks performed within work area. Trains others for back-up assignments.
  • Retrieves slides and tissue blocks sent out for consultation
  • Maintains a log of all cases presented at conferences and results of presenting pathologists' review of slides

Physical and Environmental Demands:
Requires occasional exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, constant exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, occasional working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional travelling to offsite locations, frequent activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, constant work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, constant bending, frequent lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, occasional climbing, occasional crouching/stooping, occasional driving, frequent kneeling, frequent pushing/pulling, frequent reaching, constant sitting, frequent standing, occasional twisting, and constant walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
