Duties & Responsibilities

Position Summary:

VCU’s department of Student Accounting is actively searching for a Student Account Specialist. Serving in an integral role supporting student success at VCU, the Student Account Specialist provides exceptional and timely customer service by phone, email, and in-person to students, parents, third-party representatives, and others regarding the assessment, billing, and explanation of student accounts. The position processes tuition waivers and reviews and audits student account activity to ensure precise billing and collection of student account charges (tuition, fees, room, and board). This position provides individual and prompt service combined with accurate and timely billing, ultimately contributing to the recruitment, success, and retention of talented and diverse students at VCU.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Student Account Support (50%): Provide effective counsel and guidance on student accounts by responding professionally and accurately to inquiries as well as call center escalations.
  • Account Adjustments and Review (30%): Routinely manage, review, and adjust data in Banner related to student accounts based on requests and identified errors to ensure the accuracy of account information.
  • Other Administration (20%): Perform a range of administration tasks to support Student Accounting procedures and policies such as report review, hold placement and removal, and court proceeding support.

Qualifications

Minimum Hiring Standards:

  • High school degree or equivalent.
  • Customer service experience, preferably in a financial (banking or accounting) setting. Student employment or similar experience may be considered as well.
  • Working knowledge of accounting, bookkeeping, or other financial services.
  • Ability to perform data entry and calculations.
  • Familiarity with computers in a Windows environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in-progress or completed.
  • Customer service experience in a high volume, fast-paced environment.
  • Customer service experience in a financial (banking or accounting) setting.
  • Bilingual (particularly Spanish) with either verbal and/or written ability.
  • Familiarity with VCU as a student or employee.

  • Position work is performed primarily on campus, in-person, but has the potential flexibility for remote work.
