THIS IS A NON-CAREER APPOINTMENT THAT IS LIMITED TO 129 HOURS PER MONTH

The Bureau of Investments is looking for a Student Assistant who is a self-starter that loves learning and working in a team setting. In this role you will provide general administrative support to the Venture Capital Division (VCD).

Under direct supervision of an Investment Specialist, Senior Assistant Investment Manager, or Senior Investment Manager, the Student Assistant will assist with the analysis and research required when recommending the purchase, retention or sale of investments in companies or limited partnerships in one or more specific industries and other closely related business fields for the VCD portfolios of the State of Michigan Retirement Systems (SMRS) pension fund. Such recommendations are based upon in-depth research and analysis of the particular company and industry involved and made within an assessment of the U.S. and global economic outlook and technical market outlook. The Student Assistant will retrieve and enter financial information and assist in the maintenance of the division databases. The Student Assistant will perform special projects, as needed.

Civil Service Regulation 3.02 authorizes student assistants to work up to 29 hours a week with a maximum of 129 hours in a calendar month. The work schedule for each semester will be determined and agreed upon by the supervisor and the student.

This position is eligible to work remotely on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and must work onsite Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Selected candidate must have a safe and appropriate designated workspace or workstation for performance of work and secure and sufficient internet access of commercial cable or wireless broadband with minimum speeds of 25 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload.

Work must be performed in the state of Michigan. If you currently reside outside of Michigan, you must relocate to Michigan to perform the duties of this position. Relocation expenses are not reimbursed.

The Michigan Department of Treasury participates in E-Verify and will provide the federal government with your form I-9 information to confirm that you are authorized to work in the U.S.

Interviews will likely occur virtually using Microsoft Teams. No prior experience with Teams is necessary, as instructions and tips will be provided to all candidates scheduled for an interview.


Non-career employees are not eligible for insurance benefits or paid time off, however, they may be able to participate in a deferred compensation plan 401k and/or 457.
