Duties and Responsibilities (*Denotes essential functions)


  • Serves as the Fisheries Program Coordinator for the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology.
  • Supports development of new graduate program in Fisheries.
  • Coordinates administrative, committee, and planning activities for the Fisheries graduate program.
  • Provides in-depth information, clarification and interpretation of institutional and administrative rules regarding the planning and development of new degree programs.
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance with institutional rules, regulations and procedures.
  • Serves as point of contact for the Fisheries graduate program for inquiries from faculty, agency partners, and administration, including updates on program development and establishment.
  • Serves as primary liaison between the Fisheries graduate program and prospective graduate students.
  • Informs participating faculty, stakeholders, prospective graduate students, and the public, on eligibility for admission, and program requirements.
  • Makes appropriate referrals to the Graduate Division, prospective mentors, etc.
  • Develops and maintains a system for electronic records, files, statistics and data bases on applicants, current students, and graduates.
  • Designs and implements procedures for improvements to program activities, e.g., new student orientation programs, job related workshops and develop internships with federal/state agencies.
  • Develops and maintains the student handbook of the Fisheries graduate program.
  • Develops and maintains the website for the Fisheries graduate program.
  • Responsible for a University of Hawaii purchasing card (P-Card) for the purchase of materials, supplies, etc., for the Fisheries office and program in accordance with University and Business Office processes and procedures.
  • Responsible for inputting and allocating P-Card charges into the Kuali Financial System (KFS).
  • Supervises and trains others in support of the program.
  • Develops and implements recruitment strategies.
  • Responsible for coordinating, administrating, facilitating and tracking student progress in the doctoral and master's degree program in Fisheries once established.
  • Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Marine Science or related field and 3 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for program coordination & student support; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
  • Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of program coordination and student support as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
  • Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with program coordination and student support.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer, apply word processing software, and spreadsheets.
  • If applicable, for supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
  • Coordinates, directs, reviews, and/or monitors the work of others in accomplishment of a specific task.
  • Monitors, coordinates, or directs the work of lower level personnel, clerical assistants and/or student assistants.
  • Reviews the work of others and/or provides training to others in area of expertise. Refers matters of policy to supervisor.
