Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assists in the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of a program to support the retention and graduation of students in their second year and beyond for the College Opportunities Program (COP).
  • Provides direct individualized services to COP students and alumni to include, but not limited to, academic advising, major selection, career planning, financial aid, scholarships, graduate education planning, reentry to the University, and other personal issues or concerns.
  • Assists in planning, implementing and evaluating COP programs and services including, but not limited to, summer residential program, family orientation, pre-orientation, semester meetings, and community service activities.
  • Assists in the planning, developing and formulating of curriculum for COP summer program courses to include, but not limited to, the College Success Lecture and Lab classes.
  • Plans, organizes and travels to high schools on Oahu and the neighbor islands for outreach, recruitment, interviewing, and selection.
  • Serves on the COP’s statewide selection committee.
  • Assists with gathering and summarizing retention data including tracking students who leave college prior to degree completion for use in reporting and program evaluation.
  • Serves as staff advisor for COP alumni student organization.
  • Co-plan, coordinate, and implement semester meeting presentations, speakers, and civic engagement programs in the community.
  • Co-facilitates the coordination and implementation of the summer college success lecture and lab classes.
  • Monitors students’ academic progress through Banner and STAR information systems.
  • Identifies academically high-risk students and works with student, faculty and other academic skills specialists to offer resources and intervention to enhance success.
  • Initiates student referrals for specific services on or off campus as deemed necessary.
  • Responsible for delivering a wide range of academic support programs and services to students of academically underprepared, economically disadvantaged, and/or underrepresented groups at the University.
  • Serves as an advocate and/or mediator for all program students.
  • Provides supervision and on-going training to student assistants and volunteers.
  • Prepares communications to be distributed via print and social media platforms to publicize student success programs, events, activities, and initiatives.
  • Assists with program development activities including grant writing and fundraising.
  • Participates in evening, weekends, and/or off-campus assignments as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Social Sciences, Education or related field and 2 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for counseling or academic advising and recruitment and retention; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
  • Functional knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of counseling and academic advising, recruitment and retention demonstrated by knowledge, understanding and ability to apply concepts, terminology.

  • Functional knowledge and understanding of principles, theories, federal and state laws, rules, regulations and systems associated with counseling and academic advising, recruitment and retention.

  • Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes and resolve the full range problems that may commonly occur in the area of counseling and academic advising, recruitment and retention.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members and individuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer, apply word processing software.
  • Knowledge of the techniques and procedures involved in academic and personal counseling.
  • Experience working with a diverse student population such as minority or disadvantaged groups.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, motivate, and advise educationally and economically disadvantaged students.
  • Ability to design, implement and coordinate a retention program for college students in their second year or beyond.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with the public, including a diverse population of prospective students, community members, education providers, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to travel to and from off-campus sites in a timely manner by means of a personal vehicle with valid driver’s license or comparable means of transportation to conduct outreach and recruitment activities throughout the year.
  • Ability to work outside normally scheduled work hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as directed.
  • Ability to travel to the neighbor islands several times a year for recruitment presentations, interviews, and college fairs as directed.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Experience with student retention programs and services in post-secondary educational environment.
  • Experience working with academically underprepared, economically disadvantaged and/or students from underrepresented backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to monitor and support students with academic difficulties.
  • Familiarity with UHM learning services, tutorial and academic support programs.
  • Experience and knowledge of UHM’s Banner Student Information Systems and STAR GPS.
