Teacher Assistant: Permanent Substitute
JOB SUMMARY
Serves in a substitute capacity on a permanent basis for an absent teacher(s) by continuing daily instruction in all areas of curriculum. At other times, assists teachers/students with special projects; works with students individually or in small groups to reinforce subjects initially introduced by the teacher; or supervises students to provide relief time to teachers for planning periods, conferences and related professional activities; and performs a variety of clerical tasks in support of the work of the instructional staff. Work is planned and implemented under the direction of the principal and professional staff. Bilingual and biliterate in targeted language may be required depending on assignment. Virtual experience may be required based on assignment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Serves in a substitute capacity for an absent teacher(s) following lesson plans in all areas of curriculum; or providing necessary reinforcement of instruction and materials.
- Discusses with teacher(s) what has happened during their absence. As required, extends lesson plans and continues daily instruction during any absence(s).
- Continues instruction and/or supervises students to provide relief time to teachers for planning periods, conferences, and related professional activities.
- Assists teachers in planning, implementing, and evaluating instructional lessons, methods, strategies, and materials to meet individual needs of students.
- Works with teachers/students on special projects/lessons/assignments.
- Prepares a variety of instructional materials to include: posters, charts, transparencies, game boards/cards.
- May supervise lunch duties, playground and bus duties as directed.
- Performs a variety of clerical tasks including correcting work papers/tests, keeping daily attendance records when teacher(s) is absent; maintaining appropriate student folders/records; and other related tasks as assigned.
- Sets up learning, laboratory, and activity centers. Individually tutors and/or assists students having difficulties.
- Attends and actively participates in staff development activities.
- Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

Education
- High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate required; and
- Number of College Credit Hours (if applicable) 48 college credits hours required.
Experience
- One (1) year virtual learning technology, remote instruction platforms, Learning Management Systems, and video conferencing tools, if assigned to Virtual Academy required.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics
- Willingness to learn and implement instructional methods, strategies, and techniques to assist teachers in the education of students.
- Ability to exercise patience, courtesy, tact, and good judgment in dealing with students, teachers, administrators, fellow employees and parents.
- Ability to independently plan and/or follow instructional lessons/assignments.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.
- Demonstrated proficiency with business technology applications (e.g. Video/Web Conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite -Word, Excel, Outlook, and/or PowerPoint preferred).
Language Requirements
- Bilingual/Biliterate If assigned to bilingual program, required to be bilingual and biliterate in targeted language. Otherwise, bilingual and biliterate in target language preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
Employee must retain active licenses, certifications, and enrollment as a condition of employment.
