Job Description

The Assistant Teacher will participate in planning and implementation of activities of the students in a full day program at The First Academy. They will assist teachers in meeting the needs of the children and families. Assistant teachers will be expected to attend professional development workshops upon the request of the Director.

Qualifications/Skills/Abilities of the Ideal Candidate:

The Assistant teacher will perform the following duties in accordance with the policies of the First Academy, NAEYC, the Office of Early Childhood:

  • Adhere to a designated work schedule and classroom assignment that complies with expectations for punctuality, preparedness, and being on the job on a day-to-day basis.
  • Plan, arrange, and maintain a safe, clean, and healthy environment that is conducive to quality care and education.
  • Have excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Plan and implement curriculum - including lesson plans, schedules, activities, and environments that meet The Connecticut Early Learning Development Standards (will train).
  • Observe, document, assess, and report the progress of children in meeting the performance standards using the Documentation and Observation for Teaching System (will train).
  • Ensure the health, safety, and security of individual children at all times through careful supervision, regular interactions, attention to physical care needs and routines
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude toward and willingness to cooperate with parents through regular and constructive communication, response to concerns and requests, individual communication at greetings and departure, welcoming of parents to center events and activities, and participation in parent conferences as necessary.
  • Work cooperatively and constructively with all program staff to address the needs of children.
  • Follow the recommendations of the health, social service, education, and dental consultants as well as special educators and therapists who may advise on the care, education, and/or development of the children.
  • Keep all communication with staff, parents, and community professionally respectful and confidential.
  • Participate in scheduled center and community events, staff meetings, open house, and other family activities, in-service trainings, marketing and promotional activities.
  • 1+ year working in an Early Childhood Education setting preferred
  • Perform any other duties as needed for the betterment of the children and families we serve.

We are looking for a candidate who has their CDA or who has taken Early Childhood Education classes (at least 12 credits would be ideal)

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $17.00 - $20.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
