Job Description

Job Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Utility Highway Worker to join our team. This role is essential for maintaining and enhancing the infrastructure of our operations. The Utility Highway Worker will be responsible for a variety of tasks that involve the operation of heavy equipment and ensuring that projects are completed efficiently and safely. The ideal candidate will have experience in utility locating, grading, and operating various types of machinery. Working under the direction of the Highway Supervisor. Work will include but not limited to plowing, mowing, building maintenance, road maintenance and whatever is deemed necessary to help keep the department running smoothly. Must be able to respond to work within a reasonable time. Must have a valid MA driver's license and preferred CDL License and Hoisting License, or 1 year allowed to be fully licensed. Work is performed in a garage, yard, and varied field locations, usually noise levels are loud, may be subject to exposure to hazardous substances or materials, work is performed inside and out-of-doors in all weather conditions, work is performed during normal working hours, and as required, during storm and other special or emergency conditions. Requires the driving and operation of light and heavy trucks and equipment including but not limited to; pay loaders, backhoes, grader, snowplows, tractors, lawn equipment, compactor, and other equipment; also requires the operation of hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and a jackhammer, occasionally uses a ladder and office equipment, telephone, copier and computer. Has contact with the general public directly, by telephone or two-way radio, most contacts are with fellow employees in the department or town government and contractors' construction trade skills. Must pass CORI and Drug Test. Will be trained in safety requirements. Salary will be based on experience and various licenses held. May be negotiated.

Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy equipment including graders, snowplows, loaders, bulldozers, backhoes, lawn equipment, compactor and dump trucks to perform utility work.
  • Conduct utility locating to identify underground utilities before excavation.
  • Assist in paving and building projects as required.
  • Maintain equipment by performing routine inspections and minor repairs.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and company policies while operating machinery.
  • Collaborate with team members to complete projects on time and within specifications.
  • Keep work areas clean and organized to promote safety and efficiency.

Skills

  • Proficient in heavy equipment operation with a focus on grader, loader, bulldozer, backhoe, front loader truck, snowplow and dump truck operation.
  • Strong understanding of utility locating techniques.
  • Ability to pave and build as part of construction projects.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively work within a team environment.
