Job Summary

Under general supervision, protects the financial standing of the hospital by making financial arrangements for patients without insurance or with inadequate insurance coverage. Collects required deposits from patients and guardians. Assists patients in obtaining financial sponsorship from outside agencies and charitable programs when financial need is indicated. Coordinates acceptable payment plans with Patient Accounting and Physician Billing

Essential Functions:
  • Interviews self pay and discount program patients to determine financial ability. (15%)
  • Interacts with patients regarding problem situations such as legal action, motor vehicle related accounts, identity questions, insurance coverage and prior bad debt accounts. (15%)
  • Negotiates payment arrangements and follow-up collections. (15%)
  • Collects co-payments, point-of-service payments and other payments, issue receipts and balances cash drawers. (15%)
  • Generates financial assessment reports for Patient Access Director. (15%)
  • Provides customer service to patients and co-workers. (5%)
  • Documents or updates patient demographic information. (5%)
  • Gathers statistical data. (5%)
  • Counsels patients who cannot pay and/or refers to appropriate agency for assistance. (5%)
  • Reviews prior outstanding balances and collects co-pays and deposits (5%)
  • Promotes positive interpersonal (customer) relationships with fellow employees, physicians, patients and visitors. Treats these individuals with courtesy, dignity, empathy and respect; consistently displays courteous and respectful verbal and non-verbal communications. (0%)

Education:
  • No High School Diploma and/or No GED required

Work Experience:
  • Typically, two years in a hospital/medical office setting preferred
  • Relevant experience in a customer-service business, with the ability to relate to a diverse patient population.

Licenses:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Bilingual skills are preferred.
  • Knowledge of PC applications (Windows) with an emphasis on Excel and/or healthcare applications.
  • Ability to complete 25 wpm typing.
  • Ability to prioritize and perform a multitude of duties is required.
  • Excellent telephone skills and critical analytical thinking skills, with an emphasis on customer service.
